DESIGN PROCESS

OUR 9-STEP DESIGN PROCESS HAS BEEN TIME-TESTED TO PRODUCE THE MOST THOUGHTFULLY DESIGNED, SEAMLESSLY EXECUTED NEW HOME FOR OUR CLIENTS

01.

PROJECT KICK OFF

We kick off every new build project by establishing the top level details - i.e. scope of work, budget, timeline, etc. We seal the deal by mutually signing a Scope of Services Agreement and we collect a retainer to secure your project in our firm’s workflow.

02.

EXPLORATION

Formal introductions aside, it's time we really get to know each other! We want to unearth your likes, your aversions, how you want to experience your new home, the ins and outs of your daily life and more. We collect a number of materials from you: inspiration images, architectural plans, images of existing furnishings to be repurposed. We also have you complete a questionnaire to kick start our conversations that follow.

03.

EXTERIOR DESIGN

Our business may be interior design, but we start designing on the outside before working our way in! We execute your vision for the exterior of your home by specifying materials and finishes for siding, foundation, roofing, trim, doors, windows, paint, stain and lighting. If you are building in a club community or historic district, we complete all necessary documents and processes to receive approval for your exterior design.

04.

ARCHITECTURAL CONCEPTS

The Architectural Design phase addresses all materials, finishes and fixtures that make up the interior architecture or "hard surfaces" of your home. Think cabinetry, countertops, tile, flooring, lighting, plumbing, hardware, millwork, cladding and MORE! During this phase, we present one concept for each space complete with scaled space plans, inspiration images, product selections and physical samples of materials.

05.

ARCHITECTURAL SPECS

Using your feedback from the Architectural Concepts phase, we refine and specify each and every component required to complete the architectural design of each space. We obtain quotes for materials and develop detailed plans, elevations, schedules and spec sheets to thoroughly communicate the design plan to your contractors, subs and trades that will execute the work.

06.

ARCHITECTURAL IMPLEMENTATION

We work closely with your contractor, subcontractors, and tradespeople to execute the architectural design through site visits and various construction documents. Consider us your on-site liaison throughout the entire build process. We ensure our collective design vision becomes a reality.

07.

FURNISHINGS CONCEPTS

When it comes to furnishing your new home, we tap into hundreds of trade-only vendors to specify furniture, lighting, rugs, textiles, soft-goods, art, accessories and wallcoverings, in addition to considering any of your existing pieces to be repurposed. We consider scale, texture, materials and most importantly - you, the homeowner! We present one concept for each space, complete with scaled furniture plans and physical samples of materials.

08.

FURNISHINGS SPECS

Using your feedback from the concepts phase, we refine our selections and specify every bit and bauble required to fully furnish each space. We obtain quotes for all items to be presented in a product proposal so that you know the overall investment in relation to your established budget before moving forward to the implementation phase.

09.

FURNISHINGS IMPLEMENTATION

We process all orders for products and materials on the furnishings proposal, meticulously managing the logistics to ensure your items are received at the proper destination without damage or defect. Once all items are received, we manage the white-glove installation of all furnishings, window treatments, wallcoverings, etc. that we've purchased for your project. You won't have to lift a finger!

Frequently Asked Questions

  • New construction projects are billed on an hourly basis at $150 per hour for all team members. Time spent on your project is diligently tracked and described in once-per-month time billing invoices so you know exactly what we’ve been working on!

  • Retainers go towards time billing. At the onset of the project, we collect a retainer and hold it in funds available for your project. When we conduct monthly invoicing for time spent on your project, we apply funds from your retainer to cover the balance of the time billing invoice. When your retainer funds get low, we collect an additional retainer so that our services are never interrupted.

Don’t worry - we like to over-communicate in this area so you’re never in the dark! In addition to weekly updates on how much time we’ve spent on your project and what tasks we’ve completed, each month you’ll get a copy of your invoice along with a report of how much retainer funds remain.

  • It is never too soon to hire us on for your new construction project! We prefer, if possible, to be involved at the onset of your architectural planning, particularly if you’re working with an architect to customize your home plans. During the Exploration phase, we are able to lend our expertise, from an interior designer’s perspective, on the floor plan and exterior elevations of your home. It’s imperative to have all of your key team members - architect, contractor, and interior designer - lined up before you begin designing your new home. You’ll, no doubt, get the best result if you do!

  • Most definitely, we love making new friends! If your project involves working with a new-to-us contractor, RBID will schedule an introductory meeting with your contractor so that each party understands the scope of work to be handled by the other. We’re well versed in the language of new construction and have no issue developing new partnerships with contractors and subs.
