Nesting

Earlier this month we completed a nursery project for a baby girl expected this spring and it reminded me of my own time of expecting our sweet Abe. Preparing a place for your first born is a precious time of waiting, preparing, worrying, celebrating and more. It was a season of our lives that I’ll cherish forever!

My approach to design and business maxim - “creating spaces that nurture, encourage and inspire” - was experienced on a deeper, personal level as I designed a space for my son. Transitioning this room from the many purposes it has held before - guest room, storage, home office - to a safe haven for my newborn was a cathartic experience. Beyond choosing the perfect blue/green paint color to pair with the toy truck prints, the design process involved evaluating his needs from his first moments of life to the years beyond as he grows (a convertible crib, a changing table that can double as a dresser) and considering the feelings I would want his room to evoke (rest, love, safety, did I mention REST?!). These four walls will hold the first years of my son’s life, growing and changing with him, making up the backdrop of his first memories. Designing Abe’s nursery was a reminder of why I chose this creative outlet and career path - to create homes that nurture, encourage and inspire even the littlest ones who call it home.

The palette for is room began with the vintage toy car prints from Leslee Mitchell Art. They remind me of my granddaddy’s love for automobiles. We inherited the vintage pendant light from Bob’s grandmother and painted the shade Benjamin Moore Blue Echo. The antique rocker came paired with a matching chair as a flea market find. Abe loves the creaks it makes on the wood floor when we rock. I believe every room should have something “old” in it to add patina and richness.

This is, by far, my favorite room in the our home, not just because of how it looks, but who it holds. How do you curate special places in your home?
